Fur Tutorial for SAI by FeisuCakester Fur Tutorial for SAI by FeisuCakester
I made a quick tutorial for how i make fur on realistic animals and commissions.
I only recently developed this method, using past knowledge from tutorials and adding in my own flares until i came up with an easy way of making realistic fur. I did the entire tutorial with the Brush tool on SAI.

Edit 1: I may have figured something out... I'm not sure but feel free to reply... either way

I may be having the same problem as :iconmothquake: I am using the brush tool with the same settings and everything..  though the way i color i use separate layers and line art i select all my line art.. On the Line=art layer.. then i go down to the blank layer below. Problem is Nothing is showing up.... No color or anything Just blank. and its frustrating me Unless you cant use Line art and such and u have to do the fur with no guideline/Line art selections and stuff at all ...this is basically pretty saddening for me..

This tutorial is great, but I have no idea what brush you're using b/c the only tools that have those options are the water tools and they don't get a point t the end from pen pressure like the pen tool :(

I'm using the Brush. If you don't have it already you should be able to right-click one of the blank spaces and choose "brush". Also, to make lines taper off at the ends, you can go to advanced settings and make sure the "size" box is checked~
I hope that helps!

So, on step two and three, as I increase the density of the brush, am I supposed to do anything else? It seems all increasing the density does is make the "fur clumps" from step 1 brighter.

Making it brighter is the entire point; it adds depth to the fur clumps by intensifying shadows and highlights~
Making the brush smaller might also help

what's the stabilizer? o:

It's the function on the upper bar, on the right. I always use S-3 for example for the outlines. it stabilizes what you're drawing, I don't even know how to explain it :P use it and you'll see :)

Exactly as the tutorial says, and nothing else has changed from the default. I'm going to try to re-install the tablet. It's a great tutorial though!!

If 100% dilution won't let you paint, then you can lessen the dilution until it works the same for you~

do you use a tablet? I tried doing this, i use a mouse. i set all the setting as you did, and it comes out as an oval shape instead of tapered at the ends. i understand that would be changed most likely with a tablet, but i went to just see how the effect went when changing the density and going back over it and it did nothing. It doesn't have the strands tha show in yours.. sorry if i'm being bothersome or if i'm missing something but is there anyway you could help? :c

Yes, I use a tablet. I don't think there would be any way to do this with a mouse q-q

You could do it with a mouse, but it will take a LOT of resizing the brush up and down and switching between white and black color to "erase" the round edges. A tablet is pressure sensitive, which is what gives you the tapered edge. With a mouse it's pretty much binary: full intensity or no intensity. I'm not sure how SAI works, but if you can set the opacity of a layer as well as the blending mode you could make multiple layers substituting opacity for intensity.
You might want to work in multiple layers anyway because that would allow you to make changes to the darker areas even after you've painted the lighter ones.

You bought it yet you didn't get everything? That's odd. I'm not sure if there is a fur brush for SAI, but you use the brush tool at several different settings to manually make the fur.
